Annual Report 2013
CBI
CLEAN BATIK
INITIATIVE
With over 500 supported SMEs in Indonesia, domestic promotion had a clear priority to
support the industry and to stimulate consumption of environmentally friendly batik. CBI
managed to participate in 45 domestic promotion events all over Indonesia. Well-known
flagship events such as Adiwastra Nusantara and the World- Batik Summit were included
annually in the trade fair and promotion calendar. The CBI Batik Promotion Roadshow in
all major five-star hotels in Bali was also a great success. Not only was CBI able to raise
awareness of working and production conditions in the batik industry, it was also able
to showcase the art-like production process through live batik making demonstrations.
Besides product promotion, CBI alsopaidparticular attention to the younger generation—
as the future consumers of sustainable and more environmentally friendly products.
Therefore, CBI ran awareness campaigns focusing on education and knowledge sharing
on the environmental impacts of batik production.
A wider audience was informed about the program through the presence of a CBI
booth at 20 Awareness Campaign events. The highlights were definitely the Indonesian
Climate Change Expo and the CBI Exhibition Indonesian Batik – A Living Heritage at the
Indonesian National Gallery in Jakarta and in Solo.
Therefore, it is not surprising that CBI succeeded in building a reputable image within
the relevant circles of organizations and institutions and that our experts were invited
to introduce and share the concept of sustainable batik production and consumption
on a regular basis.
Policy Dialogue
CBI’s Policy Dialogue (PD) component aimed to contribute to the development of
an enabling policy environment. Activities within this component included policy
dialogues and lobby group activities at local, provincial and national levels.
Over the program’s four-year lifespan, CBI was able to organize in Indonesia 18 Policy
Dialogue events, Forums and Lobby Group Discussions at national, provincial, and
regional level in all six provinces. The Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of
Industry have actively supported the initiative. The policy dialogue events and forum
discussions have led to a better understanding of the issues in the batik industry and
the negative impacts for humans and nature. At the regional level especially, CBI was
able to persuade local government to pay more attention to the impact of the batik
industry on the environment, and to open minds to its sustainability concept.
