It is my pleasure to welcome you again to the 7
th
edition of Newsletter Law and Taxes.
The beginning to the second half of 2017
is marked by a number of interesting
developments, but perhaps the most recent
and interesting development is the upgrade
of Indonesia investment grade by the last of
the three major rating agencies, Standard and
Poor’s (S&P). The agency upgraded Indonesia’s
sovereign rating to investment grade on May
19, citing reduced risks regarding the country’s
fiscal condition due to an increased focus
on realistic budgeting. This upgrade follows
Fitch, which upgraded Indonesia to investment
grade in December 2011, and then Moody’s in
January 2012.
It is not immediately clear how the upgrade will
affect Indonesia’s foreign direct investment.
Many analysts have understandably concluded
that foreign direct investment to Indonesia
will see an increase. But as Indonesia has had
investment grade status from the other two
major agencies for over five years, the question
has been less about “when”, but more about
“howmuch exactly”. Whatever the case may be,
Indonesia’s macroeconomic outlook remains
stable, if not positive.
